I have a wonderful double life as a face painter…
… I’m a free-range, freelance painter and teacher, and I’m also Principal of Façade Academy of Face and Body Art. And it’s with that second hat on that I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along to the Façade Academy Open Day on Friday at the lovely Boxmoor Playhouse in Hemel Hempstead. Old friends and new painters – from the feedback I have had you all seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed it. People said how friendly everyone was and how welcome they felt after initially feeling nervous on arrival.
I think the #FPQT Face Painters Question Time was very useful and interesting – getting the views of not only of the panel, but the audience too. Some really good and pertinent questions were asked – ranging from how to set up a self-employed business to what age to paint children. It’s definitely something I’ll repeat again – perhaps at the next Paradise Jam? Thanks to Zoe Thornbury-Phillips and Sara Reynolds for stepping in and Georgina Todd for compering. I did a few demonstrations of basic skills and many of you said how much you learned from just that hour. Behind the scenes as every my right-hand woman and all round fantastic support Manda Forster for doing everything needed! If anyone wants to check out the current term’s schedule of classes, please look on the website: facadeacademy.co.uk

One of the absolutely best things about being Principal of Façade Academy of Face Painting & Body Art is organising events for all our painty friends, old and new, at all levels – everyone is welcome, so bring your friends and families! It’s at the Boxmoor Playhouse in Hemel Hempstead, Herts.
This one is an open day for painters at all levels, to showcase what we do: demos (bring your requests!), a Question Time with our expert panel, a preview of our new line-up of classes for next term and a chance to discuss what classes would suit you best. Plus the launch of my new book, A-Z Animal Designs: A Face Painting Workbook. And there will be afternoon tea and a mini jam – so bring your paints, just in case!

I’m very excited that top TV and film make-up artist Jane Fairman Maier is coming to teach a two-day Airbrush Techniques course at Façade Academy on 11-12 April. (If she looks familiar here, you might have already seen her demonstrating her amazing fantasy airbrush effects at the Paradise Jam recently.)

Thanks to everyone who came and contributed to this year’s Paradise Jam! And jam-packed it was, too, with painters both face and body, children, demonstrations, traders, nail artists, henna, balloons, glitter, airbrush, hair plaiting – and don’t forget Frankenstein.
Once again, the day whizzed by in a colourful blur with so many wonderful designs flowing from the brushes rising to the heights of our theme, Nirvana. Children laughing at our entertainer AJ and an excellent raffle to finish off the day. Nearly 400 people came through the doors, browsed the stands and visited the zoo as well – a great bonus for the accompanying families.
All in all, a great way to celebrate the 10th year of the Façade Academy.
I hope you’ll be back next year – Monday of the February half-term. And perhaps in 2017 it might even be a two-day event!
Check out the Facebook page for more photos and painty chat about the Jam.
And thanks, too, Marsha Dunstan at Pinktree for all the lovely photos.
I’m so looking forward to the 9th Annual Façade Academy Paradise Jam on half-term Monday – 15 February. This year’s theme is Nirvana.
The Paradise Jam is the most popular place to be for face and body painters and all connected activities. More than 100 artists will be painting, mingling, watching, learning and experimenting.
The Jam is held at Paradise Wildlife Park in Broxbourne, Herts, and the ticket includes entrance to the Park, so there’s plenty for children and non-painting family members to do and explore. The Jam itself is held in a huge marquee with good lighting and heating.
Bring your family (max 3 guests) and pay the fee (£8 adults, £5 children, under-2s free).
There are only 35 places left, so sign up quickly!
